History and traditions of the department are to the origins of our university education. In 1944 was created “The Department of Languages”: Kazakh language and literature, Russian language and literature and foreign languages.
In 1946, on the basis of this department were created following departments: the theory of the Russian language, the theory of the Kazakh language, Russian and foreign literature, foreign language.
The first head of the department of Russian language and literature from 1946 to 1963 was an experienced educator and scientist L.A. Fedulova. In the future, the department led her students – K.Sh. Kanafieva, Z.A. Akhmetov, H.U. Ishanov, D. Tursynov and others. With the development of the faculty and the growth of the number of students were formed new departments: a practical course of Russian language, Russian and foreign literature, methods of teaching Russian language and literature, the theory of the Russian language.
From 1963-1997 years department was headed by well-known scholars N. Dzhuanyshbekov, G.N. Sadykov, A.B. Koshkarov D. Tursynov, S.T. Tuseeva, G.I. Mamanova. Since 1997, four departments were merged into the Department of Russian Language and Literature.
For many years directed the Department of Russian Language and Literature academician of the IAHE (International Academy of Higher Education), Doctor of Philology, Professor V.I. Zhumagulova.
V.I.Zhumagulova – known scholar and linguist, researcher language media in Kazakhstan, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Academician of the International Academy of Higher Education, Honored Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The results of research V.I. Zhumagulova found practical expression in a number of books and dictionaries: “Satire and humor in the press in Kazakhstan: linguistic aspect”; “Tools and Techniques comic in periodicals of Kazakhstan”; “Cognitive and discursive aspects of language learning linguocultural mass media”; “Dictionary of foreign terms”; “Dictionary of modern concepts and terms”; “Concise Dictionary of linguistic terms”, “Socio-Political Dictionary of the Russian language (the end of XX – the beginning of the twenty-first century.)”, “Dictionary of linguistic terms of the Kazakh linguistics” and others.
Academician V.I. Zhumagulova adequately represents philological community of Kazakhstan at the international scientific-practical and theoretical scientific congresses, seminars and forums (Moscow, Bratislava, Berlin, Tokyo, Seoul, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Kazan and others.).
Over the years, V.I.Zhumagulova teaches courses compulsory and elective courses on topical issues of the modern Russian language, the language of the media for students of philological faculty, conducts workshops and scientific seminars for graduate students, job seekers, graduates and school teachers. The result of her research and teaching can be regarded as textbooks and manuals, which are engaged in the institutions of the republic future philologists and journalists: “Practical Course of the Russian language”; “The modern Russian language. Lexicology “; “The modern Russian language.Phonetics “; “The modern Russian language. Morphology”; “The modern Russian language. Syntax “; “Synthesis Russian language course”, as well as electronic textbooks on lexicology of the modern Russian language and special course “Problems of language and the individual author’s picture of the world”.
Under her leadership, successfully defended 5 candidate and 1 doctoral thesis.
From 2003 to 2011 the department was headed Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor R.G. Seydahmetova. Currently, the department manages Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor B.K. Bazylova.
Members of the department conducted research in Russian linguistics, comparative typology, style, cognitive linguistics, literary studies and sociolinguistics.
