The British Council and the Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University signed an agreement on the Online Teacher Community Continuing Professional Development Programme for the improvement of language and teaching skills of pre-service students of English

On 24 May 2023, the British Council, the UK's organisation for cultural connections and educational opportunities, signed the first official agreement on the Online Teacher Community with Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University. Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University is responsible for providing pre-service teacher training and other career development services to university lecturers and student teachers working and studying within Kazakhstan’s higher education system and now has accredited an Online Teacher Community programme and included it in its credit system. The purpose of this agreement is to collaborate on a project to provide a pre-service continuing professional development programme for Kazakhstani university lecturers and students of the English faculty.

Designed for pre-service university students of English in their third year, the Online Teacher Community Continuing Professional Development Programme’s goal is to increase the professional confidence of pre-service students of English by improving their language and teaching skills and equipping them with up-to-date teaching techniques that they can apply during their school practice and in future teaching careers.

With the official agreement on the Online Teacher Community programme, the British Council aims to raise awareness of university students about communicative leaner-centred English language tuition and to provide them with ideas and strategies regarding their professional development in a self-access capacity. In addition to that, it will also be important to create a collaborative professional community of pre-service students to enable them to develop their language and teaching proficiency more effectively and create an environment for joint research projects with other universities across the country.

Being one of the country’s oldest universities, established in 1944, Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University has a mission to contribute to the improvement of the quality of Kazakhstan's human capital by training leaders in teaching and learning. 90 per cent of students are girls from rural areas and low-income families who will go back to their villages after graduating from the university.

Angus Bjarnason, Executive Director of the British Council in Kazakhstan: “With today’s agreement, we are pleased to be building on the pilot programme for pedagogical universities we launched last year with further expansion of our Online Teacher Community for future teachers of English. The programme has resonated with universities who as a result have taken the decision to accredit the programme by including it in the university credit system.”
