It is possible to defend a scientific title without writing a dissertation

  NUR-SULTAN. April 9. Press center – The rules for awarding academic degrees have changed in Kazakhstan. Corrections have been made to the normative legal acts concerning the work of dissertation councils. Minister of Education and Science Askhat Aimagambetov told what changes were made to the procedure for the defense of doctoral dissertations.

  According to the new rules, doctoral students may now not even write a dissertation to defend their academic title. It is sufficient to publish several scientific articles in reputable, ranking journals.

  However, the traditional dissertation defense format is not ruled out at all.

  "You know that the number of scientific articles that doctoral students must publish during their research has been reduced from 7 to 4. In addition, if one or two research articles are published in prestigious journals with very high rankings, the doctoral student gets to defend his or her dissertation. This change, focused on quality rather than quantity, was made last year. Starting this year, some doctoral students can defend their academic title without having written a dissertation. For this the doctoral candidate must be the author of at least two scientific articles in a comprehensive review in an authoritative journal and in journals of the Q1-Q2 list of WoS and the author of correspondence", - the minister wrote on his page on Facebook.

  According to the head of the department, this innovation will greatly expand the opportunities for research without any prejudice to the results and quality of research papers. Such a practice has long been used in many foreign universities.

  However, Aimagambetov noted that it will be used as an alternative method. Doctoral students, as before, at their discretion can traditionally write a dissertation and defend a research paper.

  He also said that the composition of dissertation councils will be formed taking into account international experience.

  In addition, the procedure of defending research work is conducted live via the Internet.

  "That is, the dissertation defense procedure takes place in a completely open format. Now I urge the scientific and academic community to be active. Now you can read any scientific research and leave open feedback on the work of doctoral students", -  Aimagambetov said.
