      ALMATY. October 18. Press center – Dear friends! We continue to introduce you to the famous alumni of our University. 

      Kulyash Kunantaeva – Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Academician, Professor. She was born on March 4, 1931, in the Ulan region of East Kazakhstan. In 1952 she graduated with honors from the philological faculty of the Kazakh State Women’s Teacher Training Institute. 

      She is the first Doctor of Sciences among women in Kazakhstan. 1968-1984 she held the post of rector of the Women's Teacher Training Institute.

      She began her career as a teacher of the Russian language and literature at the October secondary school of the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region. From 1954 to 1956 – she was the head of the school department of the Lenin district committee of the Komsomol of Almaty, from 1956 to 1959 – the secretary of the Almaty regional committee of the Komsomol, from 1959 to 1964 – the secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of the Kazakh SSR, the chair of the Union of Pioneer organizations of Kazakhstan, from 1964 to 1967 held the posts of Deputy Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, from 1967 to 1968 was Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of the Almaty Institute of Foreign Languages. 

      In 1968, Kulyash Kunantaeva was appointed rector of the Kazakh State Women's Teacher Training Pedagogical Institute. For 16 years, which were under the leadership of Kulyash Kunantaeva, the educational institution has risen to a new level. During this time, modern educational buildings and three hostels were built and commissioned. In addition, a canteen, a library and a sports complex for 1200 seats were commissioned. Under the direct influence of Kulyash Kunantaeva, an 80-apartment building was built, which was handed over to the staff and teachers of the institute. During this period, the material base of the educational and scientific work of the Women's Institute was updated, 12 new laboratories were opened. They were equipped with the latest equipment and provided students with ample opportunities for research work. In this regard, qualified specialists were invited to the university.

      During the years of Kulyash Kunantaeva's leadership, the number of students increased from 3600 to 6200. Also, the number of faculties increased from 4 to 6, the number of departments from 19 to 28. At the same time, a medical center for students and a recreation center for teachers and staff were opened near the Kapchagai reservoir. 

      Under the direct influence of Kulyash Kunantaeva, the vocal-instrumental ensemble "Aygul" was created. The first group of girls on the Kazakh stage - "Aygul" in a short time won the admiration of the public with its beautiful songs and high musical taste. In the 1960-the 70s the ensemble performed Kazakh songs on the stage of more than 10 countries and made a significant contribution to the development of national art. The ensemble was awarded the highest state awards and the title "People's Creative Collective". 

      From 1984 to 1997, K. Kunantaeva worked as a professor at the Department of Preschool Pedagogy and Pedagogy of the Kazakh State Women's Teacher Training Institute, head of the Department of General Pedagogy. In 1975-1985 she was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR of IX and X convocations. 

      In 1966 she defended her thesis on the topic "Some extracurricular labor and educational associations of students in Kazakhstan", in 1981 – her doctoral thesis on the topic "Development of women's education in Kazakhstan (1920-1975)". She has published over 400 scientific papers on the issues of women's education and the development of education in Kazakhstan. They include textbooks, teaching aids, and monographs. 24 candidates and doctors of sciences were trained under the leadership of Kulyash Kunantaeva. Today, the work of the "Kunantaeva’s scientific school" continues. 

      Kulyash Kunantaeva – Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, foreign member of the Academy of Education of Russia, Academician of the Academy of Educational Sciences of Georgia, Honored Worker of Kazakhstan, Honorary Worker of Education of Kazakhstan.

      Kunantaeva was awarded many state awards for her scientific and pedagogical activities, outstanding contribution to the development of science and education. Among them are such orders and medals as "Badge of Honor", "Friendship of Peoples", "Excellence in Public Education of the Kazakh SSR", "Excellence in Higher Education of the USSR", "Person of the Year", "Honored Worker of Kazakhstan" and certificates of honor. 

      Kulyash Kunantaeva is the first female doctor of pedagogical sciences from Kazakhstan. She is an outstanding scientist, a teacher who made a fundamental contribution to the development of domestic pedagogical science and  higher education in the country.
